State Police Cracking Down on DWI Offenses Over Labor Day Weekend

DUI crackdown through Labor Day; checkpoints begin Thursday

Michigan State Police Troopers and other law enforcement statewide are ramping up efforts this Labor Day weekend to reduce traffic collisions and help keep motorists safe. This is a first in the Department's 85-year history to offer an abbreviated State Police Academy for existing Virginia Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS) certified law enforcement officers.

There were 51 DUI arrests and 283 crashes previous year during the Labor Day holiday weekend, state police said.

Over the full holiday weekend past year, troopers investigated 283 crashes, 43 with injuries.

State police, local police departments and sheriff's offices, as well as the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, AAA Mid-Atlantic, and the Virginia-based Washington Regional Alcohol Program, are working together on two annual campaigns aimed at lowering risky-driving behaviors: the Checkpoint Strikeforce Campaign and Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.). Unmarked vehicles will also be on patrol.

Connecticut State Police have cited more than 500 drivers for speeding and hundreds more for other violations this holiday weekend.

Troopers are focused on drunk driving violations, aggressive drivers, distracted driving, and speeding.

Labor Day weekend enforcement continues through Tuesday night.

They will staff sobriety checkpoints, increase roving patrols and use the State Police Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit, according to a news release.

Governor Anthony Cuomo has announced police around the state will be cracking down on DWI through the weekend.
