Ohio St., Indiana relish glitz of big stage

Hoosiers hungry for spotlight against Buckeyes

IN is providing college football with its first real surprise of the 2017 season with a 14-6 lead over No. 2 Ohio State in the second quarter.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Headed into the 2017 college football season, the Ohio State Buckeyes promised us that they were going to expand their offensive menu.

The Buckeyes dominated the later stages of the second half, showing their experience and talent was just too much for the upstart Hoosiers to handle.

A repeat in Thursday's conference opener, as Meyer knows, could doom Ohio State's title hopes before the second act even begins.

J.T. Barrett and freshman revelation J.K. Dobbins, who finished with 180 yards off 29 carries, led a run-heavy drive for the first score.

On the next play, Barrett fired a downfield strike to Parris Campbell for a 74-yard touchdown.

He found Thomas for a two yard score with 4:56 left in the third. The Buckeye offense really could not get much going in this half as it ended with in leading by one.

It didn't look like that early.

The talent gap proved too great, and Ohio State proved too resilient to be upset on this attractive night in farm country. Campbell was OSU's top receiver with 6 catches for 136 yards. He's the receiver the Buckeyes are counting on most. "So that's why I came out and played as hard as I could".

Ohio State's depth along the DL and ability to produce a pass rush late in games is going to be important against Oklahoma, Penn State, and MI.

Wilson was hired as the Buckeyes offensive coordinator in January.

Dobbins' performance set a school rushing record by a first-game freshman, but Meyer wasn't surprised, stating that his star freshman is just getting started. Mike Weber is also back after leading Ohio State in rushing with 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns. He's thick, runs well after contact and, teamed with Barrett, gives the Buckeyes the same reliable power running game that has always been there under Meyer. Barrett passed the 8,850-yard mark in the first quarter and, should he stay healthy, the senior captain is likely to shatter that record. The last six plays - all runs - accounted for 53 yards.

The Buckeyes marched down the field on the game's opening possession before the drive stalled, settling for a 27-yard field goal by Sean Nuernberger.

The same goes for an aggressive front seven, which made IN one-dimensional. Cobbs came back Thursday and led IU with 11 catches for 149 yards.

Pac-12: Utah 37, North Dakota 16: Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley threw for 227 yards, rushed for 70 and accounted for three touchdowns as the Utes defeated the Fighting Hawks in Salt Lake City. The defense picked up their play simultaneously along with the offense!

He makes his FAU coaching debut Friday night, when the Owls play host to Navy.

Several Ohio State players prepare to take the field for warmups before Thursday night's game against IN at Memorial Stadium IN Bloomington, Ind. There's a long way to go, but the Sooners are coming to down after the Buckeyes earned a hard-fought victory.
