Bypoll results: Setback for BJP as AAP wins Bawana, TDP retains Nandyal

Live Bypoll results: Goa CM Parrikar wins in Panaji, counting underway in Bawana, Nandyal & Valpoi

BJP's Sidharth Kuncolienkar had won the seat in 2014 bypoll and also in the 2017 election, but stepped down to make way for Parrikar's election from Panaji, which the chief minister represented from 1994 to November 2014. "The Congress is the only gainer", said Ms. Mukherjee.

Having lost two seats that went to polls in Goa, the Congress today alleged that the ruling BJP "indulged in corrupt practises". He has defeated BJP's Ved Prakash by 24052 votes. We led till 11th round.

The bypoll was necessitated after the resignation of Ved Prakash as the legislator in March. "In a democracy, the numbers count and right now the ruling coalition has 23 members", which gave it "moral strength", he told the media after the vote count.

Though the party's victory margin was smaller than it was in 2015, the victory was a boost to the party following its losses in the Rajouri assembly bypoll and municipal elections.

TDP candidate Brahmananda Reddy, who won the Nandhyal constituency, polled 97,076 votes beating his nearest rival YSR Congress party nominee Silpa Mohan Reddy, who netted 69,610 votes.

Ram Chander got 59886 votes while BJP's Ved Prakash managed to get 35834 votes. The BJP was at distant second and lost the poll with a margin of 27% votes.

The AAP has won this seat again, but it has lost nearly 50,000 votes in just two years in the constituency. It dipped further when its probable candidate for Panjim, Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, who was in talks with it to challenge the BJP, suddenly joined hands with the Goa Forward Party at the eleventh hour, paving the way for an easy victory for Parrikar.

There are 2.94 lakh voters in Bawana, including 1,64,114 males, 1,30,143 females and 25 third gender voters. However, there were certainly many other factors that led to the defeat of BJP candidate, if several reports are to be believed. He has not only toned down his personal attacks on Modi, but also refrained from talking about national issues at a high decibel level, instead focusing on issues of Delhi.

Congress under Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ajay Maken was desperately viewing Bawana as a chance to open its account in Delhi Assembly as the party was completely routed in 2015 elections and drew a naught. The party will have to work more to get the support it enjoyed during Sheila Dikshit's rule in Delhi.
