The developer will "bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality", said Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman.

Anyway, the first Windows Mixed Reality headsets will finally arrive for consumers this holiday season, as planned.

This new plug-and-play solution also makes Microsoft's headsets much more portable than either the Vive or Rift.

Sean also reports the controllers are not completely comfortable to use, but this is likely something which will vary from hand-size to hand-size.

Although most experts would call Microsoft's tech virtual reality, it prefers the term Windows Mixed Reality because it mixes an occluded world (where users can not see the real world) with sensors that sense both hands and body movement.

"Along with our partners, we are committed to making mixed reality affordable", he wrote in today's post. Since the company's announcement, Sony has dropped the prices on its headset and controller bundles to $449.

The Windows Mixed Reality Headset (yes, that's its actual name), which we first read about back in late-May, has a pretty cool design, featuring "hundreds of 3D polygons and a glossy tone-on-tone effect". Unlike Rift or Vive, which require extra cameras or sensors to track your head movements in three dimensions, the new headsets won't need any other accessories to be able to do the same thing. The Dell Visor features two 1440 x 1440 LCD panels (for a total resolution of 2880 x 1440) that can be flipped up to let you see the real world around you without having to remove the headset. Further, the company says that it has been working with 343 Industries to bring Halo to mixed reality experiences.

Hence the use of breathable materials in the headset to help keep the skin cooler, and anti-bacterial, quick-drying surfaces have also been utilized here. And with Microsoft supporting SteamVR content, this puts it in direct competition with the two heavyweight of the platform.

But Microsoft did not invent the concept or phrase Mixed Reality. You'll really want a PC with discrete graphics - an Ultra PC - for the best experience.

Microsoft says that these PCs will start at $499.

It's important to note that mixed-reality PCs with integrated graphics won't allow others to see what's on your screen as you play, while Ultra PCs will.

The new Halo VR project is being developed by 343 Industries.
