I have decided not to pursue a leadership position at Uber.

He will replace ousted CEO Travis Kalanick and faces the hard task of changing Uber's culture that has included sexual harassment and allegations of deceit and corporate espionage.

Mr Immelt ruled himself out of the race over the weekend, while reports intensified that Ms Whitman was the most likely successor despite her saying she also wasn't interested in the job.

As the embattled transportation company's eight-person board deliberated for hours each day since Friday, members closed in on Whitman, 61, who had previously taken herself out of the running.

Expedia did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of regular office hours. "Uber's CEO will not be Meg Whitman".

He has been chief executive of online travel firm Expedia from 2005.

Since the resignation of Kalanick, the company announced to its drivers, who are independent contractors, that they will soon be allowed to accept tips on their rides, as well as other new changes in the company.

Well, it's Khosrowshahi, if he says yes, that is - so now we can all get back to the season finale of Game of Thrones.

Last week, Uber said its sales reached $1.75 billion in the second quarter, up 17% from the previous quarter.

Once a poster child for the power of disruptive Silicon Valley technology, Uber has been reeling since February when a former engineer, Susan Fowler, wrote a blog post detailing a miserable year of employment marked by a sexist and cut-throat work environment.

But she said last month that she would not lead the company, adding that "Uber has become a distraction" and that she was "fully committed" to Hewlett Packard. That committee is trying to change the company's culture so it's better behaved, a hard task without a top leader. Early investor Benchmark Capital, which has one of the board seats, sued Kalanick claiming that he did not disclose material information about the company's problems.

Mr Immelt, who stepped down from GE earlier this year, had been seen as one of the strongest candidates for a role that has proven hard to fill amid disputes between investors and former chief executive Mr Kalanick.

Uber's board said it would review his responsibilities and reassign some to others and continue its search for a chief operating officer with a background in diversity and inclusion.
