BBCI: Barcelona attack: German woman dies in hospital

Spain PM wants improved anti-terror cooperation in EU

The number of people killed in two vehicle attacks in Spain last week rose to 16 on Sunday after a German woman died from her injuries, local authorities in Barcelona have said.

The regional health department said the woman died in the intensive care unit of Barcelona's Hospital del March.

The probe into the August 17-18 attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils has suggested that the alleged cell leader's ties to other jihadists and his criminal record for drug trafficking may have been missed because Catalan regional police didn't have information that was in the hands of central authorities.

"In a tweet, the municipal police has even suggested that" a half-million people were out in the streets", in response to the attacks of Barcelona and Cambrils which were 15 people killed and 126 injured on August 17 and 18.

Those who helped the victims, including the emergency services are said to have stretched back a mile, with Catalan flags and banners reading "we are not afraid". Authorities say 24 remain hospitalised, five in critical condition.

The march comes on the eve of a mass peace demonstration planned for Saturday in Barcelona which King Felipe of Spain is due to attend.

Spain's King King Felipe VI, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and the President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont joined the crowd side by side.

More than 120 people were wounded in the attacks.

Spain's central, regional and local authorities tried to send an image of unity Saturday by walking behind the emergency workers, despite earlier criticism that national and regional authorities had not shared information about the attackers well enough with each other. Two jihadists have been jailed under preliminary charges of terrorism and homicide. The men crashed the vehicle and attacked passers-by with knives and axes, police said.

Catalan lawmakers have unanimously condemned last week's attacks in and around Barcelona, holding a minute of silence at a special meeting of the regional parliament.
