Jeff Flake's campaign pushed back Tuesday against President Donald Trump's thinly-veiled accusation that the Arizona lawmaker is weak on border security.
The president largely read off a teleprompter as he sought to exonerate himself from any mishandling of the Charlottesville fiasco.
After coming under fire from both sides of the aisle for his response, Trump called the KKK, neo-Nazis and white supremacists are "criminals and thugs" on the following Monday. "The very dishonest media. and I mean truly dishonest people in the media and the fake media, they make up stories". I hit them with everything. "After people in the crowd begun throwing rocks and bottles at police, police responded with pepper balls and OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray to disperse the crowd and stop the assaults", Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sergeant Jonathan Howard said.
"We're gonna get our wall", Trump said to applause.
It was not all negative.
The media wasn't the only target Trump had in his crosshairs.
Almost two-thirds said that they disapprove of the way the president is handling race relations.
The remarks showed Trump has trouble getting off the media's narrative on Charlottesville.
"If we have to shut down that government, we're building that wall", Trump said.
"Was Sheriff Joe convicted for doing his job?"
Arpaio, 85, is a former birther-movement leader and open supporter of Trump's. Trump asked, before predicting that Arpaio would be just fine. He said he didn't want to bring the topic up to avoid controversy, but that "He should have had a jury, but you know what? Sad", said Cooper, mimicking Trump's Twitter vocabulary.
Trump and North Korea had a week-long war of words earlier this month, with tensions escalating to the point where Guam, the island territory with strategic US military value, sent out a tip-sheet to residents on what to do if there was a missile attack. While touring a Marine Corps base in Yuma that is a hub of operations for the US Border Patrol, Trump inspected a drone and other border equipment on display in a hangar.
The president may have surprised some when he said the wall would be funded, even if he had to tie the funding to the debt ceiling, which has to be raised by September 30. They all say what a bad guy I am.
"I'm a Republican, we're all Republicans, and I just think the senator should give the president a little room", she said. "We will win", he said.
Cooper then showed footage of CNN's live coverage of Trump's August 14 speech. Jeff Flake, another Arizona Republican who has frequently criticized Trump. But he didn't need to.
John McCain shocked many when he cast the deciding vote on the so-called "skinny repeal", a fact that Trump is still furious over.
The amped-up crowd greeted his anger with shouts of "Drain the swamp!"
However, he later added that he disagrees with Trump's plans on trade, as well as his "tone". See, I haven't mentioned any names, so now everybody's happy'.
