Torso washed ashore in Denmark belonged to missing journalist Kim Wall

Headless body found near topless beach: Missing submarine journalist identified

Analysis showed that there was a match with Wall's DNA which the police had gathered from a toothbrush, hairbrush and with blood found on the submarine.

Metal was also found attached to the body, which police presume was put there to ensure that it would sink.

The inventor, Peter Madsen, has been arrested on suspicion of killing her.Wall, 30, was last seen alive on the evening of August 10 on Madsen's submarine, named UC3 Nautilus.

First, Madsen said he had dropped Wall off in port before heading back out where the sub ran into trouble and sunk to the bottom of the sea. He was rescued from the waters after it sank.

Despite the new evidence, Madsen still maintains that Wall's death was an accident and has offered no clues as to how her body came to be mutilated and dumped at sea.

Madsen told police his submarine got into technical difficulties but when the 55 feet long vessel was brought to the surface, the state of the UC3 Nautilus contradicted the inventor's tale.

Investigators are not convinced by Madsen's latest account and suspect him of negligent manslaughter.

Police confirm that the headless female torso found in Copenhagen is missing Swedish journalist Kim Wall. It has not yet been investigated how the 30-year-old freelance journalist died, nor how or why her body was left dismembered.

DNA tests confirmed the torso is Ms Wall's, chief investigator Jens Moeller Jensen told reporters yesterday. Both she and her client were pleased that the remains had been found, she told Danish media.

A cyclist discovered her torso on Monday. "It's a true testament to the impact she's had on others", she said.

This means that the prosecution could seek to have Madsen's detainment extended on suspicion of intentional killing, writes TV2. He added police found marks on the torso indicating someone tried to press air out of the body so that it wouldn't float.

Madsen, meanwhile, has already been charged with manslaughter relating to the death of Wall.

A self-taught aerospace engineer, Madsen was one of several entrepreneurs who founded an association known as Copenhagen Suborbitals to develop and construct a manned spacecraft and submarines. She said in a statement on Facebook that "During the horrendous day since Kim disappeared, we have received countless examples of how loved and appreciated she was, as a person and as a friend, as well as a professional journalist".

"She was just doing her job and unfortunately [she died] so close to home, whereas she has travered the globe and travelled to the most remote places that most people in their lives would have never arrived in", Jose said.

Wall, a graduate of Columbia University and London School of Economics, was based between Beijing and NY.

Gathering at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in NY for a candlelight vigil Wednesday, former classmates sang "Stand by Me" and recalled Wall's distinctive reporting, charm and humor.
