"Star Wars" launches a scavenger hunt to reveal "Last Jedi" characters

This Star Wars AR game is like a bad take on 'Pokémon Go'

What is it exactly? "Star Wars has always championed new technology, and we are excited that augmented reality will allow fans to experience the universe in a whole new way".

"Star Wars", one of Disney's most important franchises, was the USA toy industry's top-selling property for 2015 and 2016, with $1.5 billion in sales over the two years, according to research firm NPD.

The game helps celebrate "Force Friday II", a toy-focused event around the world meant to promote the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. People can then scan the graphic with the app and a character will appear in the room via augmented reality.

From September 1- September 3 the Find the Force promotion will run.

In many ways, Force Friday is something of an unofficial holiday, meaning Lucasfilm has much more planned than just new toys.

The retailers include Wal-Mart Stores, Target, Best Buy and Apple stores. You're not going to be hunting down Star Wars characters in random locations, but rather engaging in glorified QR code scanning. A new character will supposedly be revealed on the first day, September 1st.

Disney will certainly not need to rely on Jedi mind tricks to peddle the products, as the "Star Wars" franchise brought in $1.5 billion in sales over 2015 and 2016.

The experience runs from September 1 through September 3, but a sneak peek of one of the new characters is already available if you download the app now. Five characters will be released per day in most stores, with 15 total arriving during the three-day event. Fans will be able to take pictures and videos to share their experience on social media and use the hashtags #FindtheForce and #Sweepstakes to enter for a chance to win a trip to the Last Jedi premiere.
