Cops Arrest Driver After Car Pushes Through Protesters

Crevonda Nance Herring's sister-in-law is supported by community activists – including Gina Torres to the left of her whose son was killed by police in June. Nance drove to St. Louis from Mississippi after finding out Herring was killed by police

The police statement, from spokeswoman Schron Jackson, said that three protesters were injured after they jumped onto the auto and fell off when the driver pulled away.

Three protesters were hit by a vehicle late Wednesday night in St. Louis, Mo. while marching in honor of Kiwi Herring, a transgender woman who was shot dead by police earlier this week. A vehicle approached, stopped, honked its horn and attempted to drive around the protesters. Some of the protesters refused to get out of the intersection, instead choosing to jump on the vehicle and beat it, the department went on. That is when police say the protesters surrounded the vehicle and began "striking it with their hands and a flag pole". "Several protesters also kicked and jumped on top of the vehicle", police said.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer David Carson tweeted: "Car just drove through protesters on Manchester, few injuries not major, only scrapes".

In an official statement, however, police gave a different version of the events.

Witness Keith Rose told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the vehicle had slowly accelerated through the group of people and that he had raised a middle finger as he was driving through.

"After we were already in front of the auto, he made a point to stop, flip us off with both hands, and then he accelerated", Gombos said. As they tried to arrest Herring she stabbed one of the officers in his arm, as well as a neighbor present at the incident, leading to the responding officers opening fire and shooting Herring, who died at the scene.

The three people who suffered minor injuries refused medical attention, police said.

Police took the driver into custody after first he first refused to stop.

St. Louis police said Herring was killed Tuesday morning after allegedly attacking a police officer with a knife. The protesters only sustained minor injuries.

One of the protesters shared a video of the rally from Periscope with the incident occurring at about 29:30 into the video.

CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV reports anger and emotion were already growing over Herring's death before the incident in the intersection.

Morgan Hunlen, 23, who spoke at the vigil, said that as a black transgender woman, Herring surely battled racism and "transmisogyny". They were not taken to the hospital. Through Aug. 12, at least 17 trans people were fatally shot or killed by violent means.
