Apple to build Iowa data center, get $207.8 million in incentives

Key votes come Thursday for Waukee Apple data center

"Apple has been searching for the ideal location and I am so proud to say that they found it right here in Iowa", Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said, noting the state's educated workforce, stable climate and low-priced, renewable energy.

Earlier Thursday the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board approved $20 million in state tax incentives. It will help offset whatever tax breaks local governments gave Apple to get the data center.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, second from left, and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, third from left, walk to a podium in front of the Capitol building, background, in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, to announce Apple's plans for two new data storage centers and to create at least 50 jobs near Des Moines. The new Public Improvement Fund, to be established and managed by the City of Waukee, will support the development of community projects like parks, libraries and recreational spaces, as well as infrastructure needs.

"Data centers like this new facility are critical to Apple's operations, and they make up the backbone of America's innovation infrastructure", Cook said.

State and local authorities have collectively approved roughly $208 million in tax incentives for the project.

City officials and the Iowa Board of Economic Development will hold the meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday to discuss the sale of property to an undisclosed developer.

"The City of Waukee is excited to be selected for this project", Mayor Peard said.

"Apple's significant investment and commitment to grow in Iowa is a clear vote of confidence in our state", Gov. Reynolds said.

"It is a minimal investment for the amount of investment that's being done in the state of Iowa", Reynolds added.

"For the past 20 months, Apple has been searching for the flawless location, and I am so proud to say they found it right here in Iowa", she said.

In addition, Apple estimated that it will create more than 550 construction and operations job in the Des Moines area.

Iowa is well-positioned to continue attracting data center investments in the future because of its geographic location safe from hurricanes, earthquakes and rolling blackouts, coupled with affordable electric rates and a high percentage of electricity generated by the wind.
