Ferrari Portofino Debuts as The California T Replacement We Deserve

Engineering improvements like the one-piece-cast exhaust header eliminate turbo lag providing optimal torque in every gear.

Ferrari is yet to reveal Australian pricing for the Portofino, which succeeds the $409,888 California T, though it plans to release further information when the new convertible makes its debut at the Frankfurt motor show.

The company Ferrari has officially presented supercar Portofino, called to replace in the line of the Italian automaker's model T. California Public premiere of new items will be held in September at the Frankfurt motor show. But in a world increasingly going soft in the hood department, Maranello has stayed true to the retractable hard-top, always the California's USP as well as its burden. A third-generation electronic rear differential - which Ferrari has dubbed E-Diff3 - has been added, integrated with the F1-Trac system, while it's also the first of Ferrari's GT's to get electric power steering.

"The Ferrari Portofino uses an all-new aluminium chassis, which features a significant weight saving over the California T". While the Prancing Horse hasn't mentioned the exact weight loss, we've been told that the carmaker has come up with new production techniques that boost torsional rigidity, a key area for a convertible. With the extra power, a sprint from 0-62 miles per hour happens in 3.5 seconds.

Powered by a 592bhp development of the California's turbocharged V8, it's expected to crack 200mph courtesy of Ferrari's odd phrasing that its top speed will be "over 199mph".

Ferrari hasn't confirmed prices for the Portofino, but it's likely to command a small premium over the outgoing California T, which has a price tag of £156,060. Ferrari says designers and aerodynamicists enlarged the front grille opening, now stretching along the width of the vehicle, and designed the full-LED headlamps with leading edges that act like air intakes.

Inside, the biggest news is one that would likely see Enzo himself turning 7,500 rpm in his grave: a new 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display mounted in the center of the dashboard. A new design for the front seatbacks allows more legroom for occupants in those small backseats.
