Incredible Photo Shows International Space Station Flying Through Solar Eclipse

Millions of Americans will have a better view of the solar eclipse than astronauts in space

During a brief window of time in Wyoming, spectators will be able to stand and watch the ISS transit over the partially eclipsed sun, followed by a total solar eclipse later.

As the moon snuck in front, Kowsky snapped the silhouette of the space station and it's six crew members - NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer and Randy Bresnik, Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli - passing by the sun. The space station crossed the path of the eclipse three times as it orbited above the continental United States at an altitude of 250 miles.

Starting off the coast of OR and leaving U.S. shores in SC, the celestial phenomenon enveloped 14 states in complete darkness for about two minutes, and left many others partially veiled.

Millions of Americans looked skyward in awe through protective glasses, telescopes and cameras on Monday as the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in a century marched from the US Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic seaboard.

NASA photographer Bill Ingalls got the once-in-a-lifetime shots from Northern Cascades National Park in Washington earlier today.

NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer and Randy Bresnik, along with cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazansky and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli are now aboard the spacecraft.

Nasa, however, has trumped them all - as you'll see by clicking the gallery above.

A NASA photographer managed to capture the moment that the International Space Station moved across the solar eclipse Monday in a series of rare high-speed photos.
