HTC drops Vive price to $600 with Viveport subscription

HTC Vive sees a MASSIVE price drop in the UAE

The Vive is available at a number of leading retail outlets in the UAE and later this week via HTC's new online e-store, with free shipping. It also launched the "Rift Summer Sale" on July 10, which reduced the price of the Rift and Touch controllers to just $399 for a limited time.

This new price drop is clearly created to make the Vive more accessible to a wider market, and brings it closer to the Rift's current £400 price point. The most successful VR headset at present is still the mobile-based Samsung Gear VR. As there was a cheaper option available in the market, nobody would prefer something as expensive as Vive.

That works out at a £160 or $200 reduction which, although not what you'd call bargain bin prices, does offer a significant discount for anyone thinking about taking the VR plunge. For HTC, the task of defending a price tag double its competitor's has been one in honing its brand messaging in the face of a massive price differential.

We have previously heard that following launch, the HTC Vive took a sizeable lead in the market over the Oculus Rift. To reach the masses, Steiber thinks there are various factors that should be worked upon, one of them being the price.

Thankfully, those wishing to pick up a Vive can now do so for far less, as HTC has slashed 200 bucks off the system's cost, bringing the price down to $599.

When you purchase Vive, you will receive Google's Tilt Brush, EverestVR, and Richie's Plank Experience. For instance, later this year Bethesda will be launching DOOM VR and Fallout 4 VR.

Virtual reality as we know it today burst onto the scene in 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign for the Oculus Rift.

We have continued to invest in growing the Vive hardware ecosystem. This price cut comes at a flawless time too, as VR games are gaining traction with Triple A developers.
