Trump teases 'decision' on U.S. strategy for Afghanistan

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham warns Trump: Removing troops from Afghanistan could 'set stage for next 9/11'

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, President Trump declared that a decision has been made on the Afghanistan War following yesterday's Camp David meeting.

"I hope President Trump, unlike his predecessor, will not put our military in a bad spot in Afghanistan".

Trump met with more than a dozen aides, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, at Camp David to discussion the administration's strategy in the region, including Pakistan and India.

The Washington Post quoted White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as saying that Trump had been briefed extensively and was studying and considering his options and will make an announcement at the appropriate time.

Mr. Trump had disapproved of the plan that Defence Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R McMaster had drawn up for Afghanistan, which would have increased the U.S troop presence in the country, open-ended. In June, Defense Secretary James Mattis was reportedly developing a plan to pour 4,000 more USA personnel into Afghanistan.

Officials said the decision on what to do in Afghanistan has also been complicated by internal differences over whether the United States should take a harder line toward Pakistan for failing to shut down Afghan Taliban sanctuaries and arrest Afghan extremist leaders.

Steve Bannon, who was officially dismissed on Friday from his post as the White House's chief strategist, has said he wants to replace US troops in Afghanistan with private contractors.

About 1,600 words long letter drew attention of U.S. President saying that pulling out of Afghanistan would "truly deliver American troops from harm's way" and bring about "an end to an inherited war". He was reportedly previously scheduled to attend these meetings.

During a July meeting, most of Trump's advisors favored sending an additional 3,000 to 5,000 troops to the Middle East, Reuters reported.

The president did not make public remarks after the meeting.
