Florida Police Officer Shot and Killed, Second Officer Is Critical

Scott takes Kissimmee police deaths cases from anti-death penalty state attorney

The two slain officers were shot late Friday night in Kissimmee in central Florida just south of the theme park hub of Orlando. They both later died from their wounds.

"We often talk about the inherent dangers of police work, but tonight those dangers were all too real for these officers", Bruno said at a press conference.

The 27-year-old officer had been with the Police Department for three years.

Baxter, a 3-year-veteran with the Kissimmee Police Department, has been pronounced dead.

Officer Baxter was killed in the attack, and officer Howard is "in serious condition". He added that Miller does not seem to have an extensive criminal history.

Two police officers were killed and four more were wounded in three separate shootings in Florida and Pennsylvania on Friday. He was later identified and arrested by the sheriff's office and initially charged with having two concealed weapons. There was a scuffle and gunfire, O'Dell said. Authorities hadn't yet said what charges he could face for Howard's death.

My thoughts and prayers are with the @KissimmeePolice and their loved ones.

Both officers were recovering Saturday morning and expected to survive, the sheriff's office said.

"The entire city of Kissimmee is in mourning".

"Let me be very clear - last night's violence against our law enforcement community is reprehensible and has no place in our state", Florida Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement. Five minutes later, dispatchers received the first call reporting the officers had been shot.

Before officers even entered the house, the suspect began shooting at them through the doorway. They thought it was an active shooter situation inside the house, so they approached the house, the media spokesperson for police said.

The officers were checking three of the suspects when a fourth opened fire.

The suspect, later identified as Derrick Brabham, 25, had been drinking all night which led to arguments which later led to threats to hurt himself and others in the home. He later died from his wounds. Responding officers found "two of their fallen brothers gravely injured on the roadway", the chief said.

In Pennsylvania, two Fayette County State Troopers took gunfire after stopping a suspect with "an outstanding warrant".

Sources tell KDKA that one trooper was shot in the stomach and was in surgery at a hospital in Morgantown around 10:30 p.m. Sources say the other trooper was shot in the hand.
