Democrats Introduce Resolution to Censure Trump Over Charlottesville Comments

Censure, Statues, Hearings: Congress Weighs Response to Trump Remarks

The resolution cites the "Unite the Right" rally and Trump's subsequent comments blaming either "both sides" or "many sides" for the violence as reason for censure.

Pelosi says Republicans must declare whether they stand with Trump, whom she said repeatedly "gives us further evidence of why such a censure is necessary".

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Worcester, joined almost 80 House Democrats this week in supporting a resolution to formally denounce President Donald Trump for suggesting that "both sides" were to blame for recent violence that erupted between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Democrats have linked Trump's defense of some of the white supremacist marchers to the influence of Bannon and other nationalist voices in the White House.

Heather Heyer, 32, was killed on Saturday in Charlottesville when a vehicle plowed into a rival protest to white supremacist demonstrators.

"President Trump's remarks in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville are outrageous", McGovern said.

James Alex Fields Jr, 20, from OH and said to have harbored Nazi sympathies, has been charged with murder. The House censured him for starting the Mexican-American War. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.; Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., and Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash.

Though some resolutions to censure several presidents-including Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, among others-have been introduced, Andrew Jackson was the only president to actually be censured by either chamber of Congress.

"I really believe if we are a government made up of three co-equal branches of government, I think it's time for the Congress to step up and into the gap, so to speak", Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C. said in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday.

Democrats have little recourse in the GOP-controlled House. "His refusal to completely and totally denounce white supremacist groups and all who enable their bigotry is unacceptable". "President Trump's growing record of repulsive statements is matched by his repulsive policies". "The president's divisive rhetoric demands action by lawmakers".

DeGette is just one of more than 79 co-sponsors of the resolution, which was introduced at a Friday pro forma session in the House of Representatives. The resolution would only need to pass the House, not the Senate, to be implemented.
