The Obi Wan Movie Is Definitely Happening, Here's Who Could Direct

Walt Disney Co is developing a "Star Wars" standalone movie based on the beloved character of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the wise and noble Jedi master, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported on Thursday. The project, T.H.R. notes, is still "at the earliest of stages, and has no script".

Sir Alec Guinness played Obi-Wan in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Daldry has scored three Oscar nominations for directing Billy Elliott, The Hours and The Reader. While the topic is still completely up in the air, Ewan McGregor has stated that he would be open to playing the character of Obi-Wan again in the future.

Regarding the return of Ewan McGregor, the actor has stated he would return to the role, but since there is now no script, there is no actor yet attached.

It would be interesting to explore his story during the 20 years between delivering baby Luke to Tatooine and handing young Skywalker his father's light saber.

There is not yet a script or a writer, Variety reports, and it's now unknown if this will be the next standalone story in the Star Wars universe. Exactly one year ago tomorrow, we shared with you a fan-made trailer for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, using footage from some of McGregor's work to give us an idea what the movie might look like. If the film comes to pass, Daldry would work with Lucasfilm to shepherd the film through its development process and the writing. The next standalone feature will be the untitled Han Solo movie, which has Ron Howard directing, after replacing Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

This has always been a film fans have been clamouring for, even though the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Episode III and IV have been explored as of late. A lot would have happened in the 20 years before we meet Guinness's Obi-Wan.

The month before, Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy had claimed her company might announce another "Star Wars" project this summer, causing speculation at the time that it would be about Kenobi. A second feature, starring the character Han Solo, will arrive in theaters May 25, 2018.
