FIBA Asia Cup 2017 quarterfinals result: South Korea defeats Gilas Pilipinas

Gilas faces South Korea in FIBA Asia Cup quarters

The Koreans thus avenged their loss to the Filipinos in their semifinal matchup in the 2013 Asian meet in Manila and, in the process, earned a spot in the semis against the victor of the Iran-Lebanon quarters setto.

China made an astonishing comeback Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Asia Cup after beating Syria 81-79, while Jordan played a close game against Iraq before winning 84-70 to move to the quarters.

For the Philippines who were far away from the team that played surprising basket ball in the first round, Terrence Romero was the best scorer with 22 points.

Gilas Pilipinas renews its long time rivalry with South Korea as they collide in the knockout quarterfinal stage of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup on Wednesday at the Beirut Nouhad Nawfal Sports Complex in Beirut, Lebanon.

Orchestrating South Korea's win that came shortly past 1 a.m. this morning Manila time was Hur Jae, one of its country's greatest players who had great success against the Philippines.

Gilas will also lean on Carl Bryan Cruz, Raymond Almazan, Jayson Castro, Roger Pogoy, Japeth Aguilar and Calvin Abueva, who is expected to return against South Korea after suffering a sprained left foot in the second quarter of their game against Qatar.

Terrence Romeo exploded in the second quarter with a total 22 points, putting a scare on the East Asian team. That being said, the Philippine team was not considered as the heavy favorites entering this quarterfinal match up having lost 9 out of their last 10 meetings against South Korea.

Wael Arakji had 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and tried to lead a fourth quarter comeback, but Lebanon's defensive lapses allowed Iran to respond and keep their cushion.

Korea's had more balanced scoring with three of its players finishing in double digits, with Sunhyung Kim leading with 21 points, and three more players coming up with identical 9 points each.

SOUTH KOREA 118 - Oh 22, Kim S. 21, Kim J.
