CIA's Pompeo says no 'imminent' threat of nuclear war

BBCI: North Korea: No imminent threat of nuclear war, says CIA chief

The U.S.is not on the brink of nuclear war with North Korea, but the threat of an armed conflict is the highest it's been in 10 years, President Trump's top national security officials said Sunday.

"I'm quite confident that he will continue to try to develop his missile program, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo said.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo says Venezuela could "very much" become a risk to the United States.

"When I served in Korea many years ago as the director of intelligence USA forces in Korea, what I was anxious about was an incendiary event getting out of hand", Clapper added.

Trump spent last week trading rhetorical fire with North Korea, warning it faced the "fire and fury" of the USA military, which was "locked and loaded" should the nation launch a missile.

"If North Korea does anything in terms of even thinking about attack of anybody that we love or we represent or our allies or us, they can be very, very nervous", he explained.

"It is probably fair to say they are moving toward that at an ever-alarming rate", he said when asked whether North Korea has nuclear weapons capable of hitting the U.S.

"The U.S. military is locked and loaded every day", McMaster said, repeating Trump's threat. "We've engaged the world to support that policy", Pompeo said, adding there will no longer be "strategic patience", the policy of former President Barack Obama, which centered on waiting for Pyongyang to return to denuclearization talks while increasing sanctions and pressure on the regime.

He also will discuss military options in the event the "diplomatic and economic pressurisation campaign" fails.

North Korea said on Thursday that plans would be completed by mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles to land near the U.S. Pacific island of Guam, 2,175 miles away.

President Donald Trump issued another strong warning to North Korea Friday.

Clapper said on CNN that the rhetoric was having a destabilizing affect and could cause North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to decide to lash out.

Tuesday: "North Korea, best not make any more threats to the United States", Mr Trump tells reporters.

Both "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior", the White House said in a statement.
