Mr Kristal hit the headlines a year ago after deciding to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah a century late.

Yisrael Kristal, an Israeli-Polish holocaust survivor holding the record of oldest living man died Friday, according to Israeli media reports. "He used to run barefoot through the night for many kilometres with a heavy package on his back, aged about 12 years old, smuggling alcohol between the lines of the war", Oren Kristal said. Born in Poland, he lost his first wife and their two children to the Holocaust - after the children died in the Lodz ghetto and his wife was murdered at Auschwitz.

Kristal, who resided in the northern Israeli city of Haifa, was born in on September 15, 1903, in the Polish village of Zarnow.

Marco Frigatti, Head of Records for Guinness World Records, presents Yisrael Kristal a certificate for being the oldest living man a year ago.

"I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why", Kristal said. "There have been smarter, stronger and better-looking men than me who are no longer alive". After surviving the war, he weighed just 81 pounds.

He married another Holocaust survivor and moved to Israel in 1950, starting another successful confection business, the Times of Israel reported. "All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost".

Last October, when he turned 113, Kristal celebrated his bar mitzvah at the Kosel.

The current holder of the title "oldest living person" is Violet Brown, a 117-year-old Jamaican woman, born in March of 1900.
