Partial Lunar Eclipse To Be Visible Across India Monday Night

“On February 11 this year there was a penumbral eclipse of the moon. It was an event where the moon passed not through the direct shadow of the earth but through its periphery and thus it could not be discernible by most of the population,” he said

Its path crosses southern IL, marking the first time since 1869 that a total eclipse has been visible from our state.

This moon has been called the "Sturgeon Moon" by First Nations tribes in reference to the species of large fish that's easy to catch in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain around this time of year.

In honor of the event, officials over at the Shreve Memorial Library are hosting an All-American Eclipse Viewing party at the Broadmoor Library in Shreveport.

After the rains cleared up, people came out in large numbers all over the country to watch the moment when the moon, sun and the Earth became one as they aligned in nearly a straight line.

The moon orbits the Earth every 29 and a half days.

The partial lunar eclipse, which occurs when the earth moves between the sun and the moon will commence at 3:22am and last around 2 hours. It covers the whole or part of the Moon with its shadows also known as penumbra. Hence, they appear at about the same sight in the Earth's skies.

Wilson says the sun will be about 85 percent covered in Richmond on August 21.

Unfortunately, for CT, we won't be in the path of totality with this rare event, but you will have the opportunity to see nearly 70% of the sun vanish during the day on August 21st.

A partial lunar eclipse is when the earth moves between the Sun and Moon but they do not make a perfectly straight line. Wichita State University's Greg Novacek offers the following tips on how to watch a solar eclipse safely. Before that, in 1970, a total solar eclipse skirted the Atlantic coastline from Florida to Virginia. This, in turn, leaves the Moon dark and we can see a shadow on the moon. Officials at the Kopernik Observatory say it may come closer to our area giving us a higher chance to view it within the totality.

The total American eclipse will commence at around 11:46 AM ET in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The shadow shall travel across the forecasted path at a remarkable speed of 1,500 miles per hour.
