Mosquito pools in Ridgetown test positive for West Nile

West Nile virus found in mosquitoes in Richmond, Henrico neighborhoods

A mosquito sample from Union County tested positive for West Nile virus.

The species of mosquito carrying the West Nile Virus can be found in a variety of places such as old tires, stagnant pools of ground water, artificial containers and catch basins.

Symptoms of West Nile generally occur three to 14 days following the bite of an infected mosquito, and range from fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and less frequently skin rash and swollen nodes to severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, disorientation, muscle weakness, coma, or death. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.

You should also take steps to mosquito-proof your home. The Vector Control District plans to collect adult mosquitoes with traps in the area where the crow was discovered.

Four out of five people who are bitten by an infected mosquito will not experience any illness. The East Shore District Health Department locally administers the program that includes mosquito and human surveillance and aggressive elimination breeding conditions. There have been two reported cases this summer in IN, in Hamilton and Lake counties. During 2016, 13 cases of West Nile virus infection were reported among Wisconsin residents. The elderly and those with weak immune systems are the most vulnerable to the virus. The health department will be working to control the mosquito population in that area with a larvicide, which kills mosquito larvae, and making sure swimming pools are working properly. It made its first appearance in Niagara in 2001 in a dead blue jay.
