Gunman attacks southeast Nigeria church 8 killed

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state Police Commissioner, Mr Garba Umar, had confirmed that eight worshippers died and 18 others were injured in the early morning attack.

Umar, however, said there was only one attacker.

"Thanking over 50 doctors who were on ground looking after the injured, the governor assured their families that all medical bills will be taken care of by the state government‎".

He rejected reports the attack was carried out by Boko Haram militants.

He said, "From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried out the attack must be an indigene of the area".

In his reaction, Victor Oye, the National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, said that no amount of provocation could justify the killing of innocent people who had gone to worship in a Church.

According to the priest, an unidentified man came into the Church, shot at a man, Chief Akunwafor Ikegwuonwu, before shooting sporadically at other worshippers.

He added: "such conduct shows the people behind the act do not fear God". The police have launched a manhunt on those behind the attack.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has described Sunday's attack on worshippers in a Catholic church in Anambra state as abominable, barbaric, inhuman, and the height of wickedness.

Unknown gunmen had today Sunday, 6th August 2017 entered the church, while the mass was going on and shot at worshipers.

He again reiterated his call for the overhaul of Nigeria's policing architecture that will lead to reform of the Police Force, equip them with modern and sophisticated gadgets so as to discharge their duties of protecting lives and property effectively, and ensure social order in the society. The command assures ndi Anambra that the police is on top of the situation and will fish out the perpetrators soon.

Obiano who described the attack as a sacrilege said the briefing he received from the police had revealed that the shooting was a reprisal attack by the drug barons who traced their victim to the church.
