A Northwestern University professor suspected in the stabbing death of a Chicago man has been arrested in California, police said.

Somerville College senior treasury assistant Andrew Warren, 56, and Professor Wyndham Lathem, 42, were taken into custody after handing themselves in last night.

Guglielmi said Lathem, an associate professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern University, had some kind of relationship with Cornell-Duranleau, who moved to Chicago from MI to work in a salon, but the two had "some type of falling out" before the fatal stabbing.

Surveillance cameras recorded both suspects leaving Cornell-Duranleau's upscale apartment shortly after the murder, according to police, and authorities issued warrants for their arrest on Wednesday.

Lathem on Friday allegedly recorded a video message in which he apologized to the friends and family of the victim, police said. They will appear before an Oakland Court and be returned to Chicago where they will be interrogated by CPD homicide detectives. Cornell-Duranleau, a hair stylist from MI, was living in Chicago.

"Both individuals will be held accountable for their actions and we hope today's arrest brings some comfort for the victim's family", Chicago police said in a statement.

Police believe Mr Warren and Mr Latham had a relationship with the victim but Mr Guglielmi declined to elaborate.

Lathem and Warren probably took two or three days to travel from Chicago to California, with the manhunt not far behind. In the meantime, the #University Of Oxford was sending Warren correspondence, urging him to turn himself in and deal with the consequences, according to the Independent.

Following the interrogations, we will have a press briefing outlining our case against them. Chicago police described Lathem and Warren as armed and unsafe, although authorities said that they surrendered without incident in California.

Warren was arrested in San Francisco while Lathem was arrested in Oakland, US Marshals inspector Ed Farrel told the Chicago Tribune.

"This is now a criminal matter under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and Northwestern University is cooperating in that investigation", its statement said.
