RUSSIA HACKING: Mueller's probe gathers steam, sets up grand jury

Robert Mueller special counsel

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that Mueller had impaneled a grand jury in Washington to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and allegation of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.

According to USA media reports, the grand jury has issued subpoenas related to a meeting that Donald Trump's son Trump Jr and son-in-law Jared Kushner held past year with a Russian attorney who had promised incriminating material against Hillary Clinton.

Remember, Mueller is looking into whether the Trump campaign worked with Russian Federation to win the election, but the investigation can uncover other illegal activity and may be looking into Trump associates' financial irregularities right now.

"It was the middle of the afternoon, and he just picked up the phone to say how innocent I was", Trump said.

President Trump is not a fan of Mueller's probe. Experts who commented for the story agreed that the move indicates Mueller's investigation is set up to be rigorous, long-term, and large in scale.

The grand jury reportedly started weeks ago but news of their work became public on Thursday after two sources notified the Wall Street Journal.

Clapper said he was not surprised that Mueller was now using a grand jury and that it, and the increasing size of Mueller's staff, both suggest "that there is there, there".

Trump said that the Russian Federation story makes Democrats "feel better", and repeated his call for investigating Clinton's private email server.

They are powerful investigative tools that allow prosecutors to subpoena documents, put witnesses under oath and seek indictments if there is evidence of a crime. It is also another step forward in the process that could result in former members of the Trump campaign and current members of the Trump White House facing criminal charges.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham from SC brought forth a bill on Monday to protect Robert Mueller from Trump trying to fire him.

Ty Cobb, one of Trump's lawyers, told the paper he was unaware of the DC grand jury and added: "The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of [the special counsel's] work fairly".
