Microsoft Fine-Tunes Windows 10 and Debuts Beta Eye Control

Windows 10 Eye Control

The company has made an announcement of performing a beta testing on Windows 10 feature eye control that will help disabled people to access the key components of the operating system.

Microsoft also plans to expand support to more eye trackers, including the Tobii Dynavox PCEye Mini, PCEyePlus, EyeMobile Plus and I-series, said Sarkar.

As we mentioned yesterday, this feature will allow users to control text-to-speech, an on-screen mouse and keyboard, and several other common Windows tasks by tracking eye user movements via a connected camera device.

If your machine supports Eye Control, all you need to do is download this latest Windows 10 preview build, this update from Tobii and run Windows Update to download the Tobii Eye Tracker HIDClass Driver.

"The new default colours will modernize the look of the Windows Console and make it more congruent with other terminal experiences, such as the integrated terminal in VSCode", the company added.

Windows 10 test build 16257 also updates the Windows Console colors to make them more modern. "We look forward to our ongoing collaboration to further develop these features in future releases as we continue on our mission to empower people to achieve more". Still, the most surprising change is available via the command prompt. It lets users expedite the typing process by looking at the first letter and last letter of a word and then looking at letters in between. The members would need to login to Windows Insiders for access to this feature. In addition, Developer Insiders who are in the Office Insider program will see new support for using 3D images in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The address bar has also received some updates, where it will remain under the cursor as long as it's not in focus and you aren't clicking on it or dragging any text around. If the prediction was incorrect, you can simply select an alternative prediction provided.

Note: The Tobii 4C Eye has magnetic attach points on the back of the device. As for launching this on stable Windows version has not been decided yet.

Windows Defender has also been updated with performance improvements targeting container launch times. Eric Badger, Principle Software Engineer Lead on Windows, and Harish Kulkarni, Principal Software Development Engineer in Microsoft Research, quickly started prototyping new eye tracking scenarios together.
