What is now being called "The Great American Solar Eclipse" will cross over parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and SC on August 21 2017. During the partial lunar eclipse, the moon inside the umbral shadow will be a subtle red, but hard to see in contrast to the much brighter moon remaining in the outer penumbral shadow.
You probably know not to look at the August 21 solar eclipse without special glasses or a viewer. Prior to this year's event, the most recent total solar eclipse to pass over the continental United States was in 1979. The closest spots to see the eclipse from Alabama will be East Tennessee and parts of North Georgia. Experts say not to look directly at the eclipse because you can severly damage your eyes or even go blind. Eclipse glasses look a little like the old, flimsy 3D glasses, but instead of blue-and-red lenses, they come equipped with two dark, filtered lenses that protect against UVA and UVB rays.
The eclipse will leave the country entirely in Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:48 p.m. The eclipse will begin in the U.S.at around 10:15 a.m. PDT off the coast of OR and will leave the U.S.at about 2:50 p.m. EDT in SC.
During an eclipse, the moon passes in front of the sun, with the alignment and size matching-while the Sun is about 400 times larger than the moon, it is also about 400 times farther away, meaning they appear the same size during an eclipse.
"Over time, the number and frequency of total solar eclipses will decrease", Vondrak said.
CNN: Where will you watch this eclipse from?
If you are buying eclipse glasses, you need to make sure you're getting the right ones - there have been reports recently about false glasses being sold.
Looking directly at the sun is unsafe, except during the total phase of the solar eclipse.
Totality is when the moon completely blocks out the sun, casting a shadow no larger than 167 miles wide on the earth. The last time a solar eclipse occurred in the contiguous United State was on February 26, 1979, and it won't happen again until April 8, 2024. And then in the late 1990s I chose to set up a website and I was struggling for a name for the website and my wife suggested Mr. Eclipse. The total eclipse, when the sun is completely blocked by the moon, will last up to 2 minutes and 40 seconds, depending on location.
