He has been charged with a dozen counts of committing lewd or lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14 and two counts of committing sexual acts with a child younger than 10 years old, per sheriff's Lt. Greg Rylaarsdam.

The alleged victims had been taking personal tennis lessons and officers from the San Diego County Sherriff's Department Child Abuse Unit are continuing to investigate. He will face arraignment on Friday, California time, where the charges will be formally read.

Nikolaos Philippoussis, 68, has been remanded in custody in San Diego, accused of molesting two minors who took tennis lessons from him.

He spent Tuesday night behind bars at San Diego's Central Jail.

He is the father of Mark Philippoussis, a now-retired award-winning tennis player.

In recent days he was listed as a substitute with the local professional tennis club, the San Diego Aviators.

He also reached the finals of the 1998 US Open and the 2003 Wimbledon tournament, but lost both matches.

Mr Rylaarsdam stressed that the investigation was in its early stages and said police were interested in speaking with members of the public who had knowledge about the case.

"On a lots of cases we go all the way to the end and get all of our facts in order and all of the evidence lined up and then we go out and arrest somebody". (AFP) Nikolaos "Nick" Philippoussis.

Bail for Nick has been set at US$2.5 million (AU$3.15 million) and the investigation is ongoing.
