Sources told Politico this week that Tillerson feels he is "not being allowed to do his job" and indicated that the diplomat is unsure he wants to stay on for even a full year at the State Department.
Tillerson has reportedly had an icy relationship with Trump and the White House since he became secretary of state.
Following reports that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson plans to close the State Department's Office of the Coordinator for Cyber Issues (S/CCI), a group of U.S. representatives sent him a letter urging him not to do so.
CNNreported on Monday that Tillerson had growing doubts about President Trump and the administration, and he was considering an early exit from his post.
"The secretary has been very clear he intends to stay here at the State Department", Nauert told reporters when asked about the resignation rumors, according to the Hill.
Besides policy differences, the CNN wrote, Tillerson was fed up with Trump's recent attacks against US Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
"He's just taking a little time off".
"So, he's entitled to take a few days himself".
One source of acrimony is a severe staffing shortage at the State Department - only 10 of 128 positions have been filled, reportedly due to differences of opinion regarding appointments.
Last Thursday، he met with the president، Defense Secretary James Mattis، Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford and other top officials at the Pentagon، before briefing members of the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill; meanwhile، his public schedule listed only "meetings and briefings" at the State Department. Trump also has sided with Saudi Arabia in its feud with Qatar even as Tillerson has sought to mediate the dispute between the two U.S. allies.
"He does, however, serve at the pleasure of the president just as any Cabinet official would", she added. "He recognizes that - he's deeply engaged in that work".
