State Dept. warns of possibly tainted alcohol in Mexico

The State Department is warning tourists of possibly tainted alcohol being served in Mexico after Abbey Conner 20, and brother Austin 22, passed out in a hotel pool

"There have been allegations that consumption of tainted or substandard alcohol has resulted in illness or blacking out", the State Department wrote in its updated web page.

No matter where you travel, it's smart to pay extra attention to how much you're drinking and to local alcohol laws so as not to put yourself at risk. It's one of the 10 Iberostar Hotel & Resort locations in Mexico.

In January, Wisconsin college student Abby Conner drowned after drinking in a resort pool near Playa del Carmen.

The death of Abbey Connor, 20, is just one of many incidents of travelers becoming sick after drinking alcohol at Mexican resorts, the paper reported.

Abbey, who was found floating face-down in the pool, had her life support removed after being declared brain-dead. He had a lump on his forehead and a severe concussion.

An attorney working for the Connor family recently visited the Paraiso del Mar pool area, where the Connors had been swimming, and noted in a report: "They serve alcoholic drinks with alcohol of bad quality and in great amounts, mixing different types of drinks". According to the Journal Sentinel, the Mexican Tax Administration Service reported in 2015 that more than 40 percent of the alcohol consumed in the country is illegal, having been produced in unregulated circumstances.

Mexico is the top worldwide destination for US travelers; almost 30 million Americans visited the country previous year alone.

Iberostar hotels and resorts told CBS News they "only purchase sealed bottles that satisfy all standards".

"They said I couldn't get out of the pool and I wasn't even able to stand up in the pool", Kathy Daley told the Sentinel. "We are deeply saddened by this incident and reiterate our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family". "Travelers should make efforts to obtain complete information on billing, pricing, and proposed medical procedures before agreeing to any medical care in these locations".
