After Trump's Hezbollah Mishap, Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri Clarifies Situation

Saad al Hariri arrives with Army Commander General Joseph Aoun at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon headquarters in Naqoura near the Lebanese Israeli border southern Leban

Hariri said he has numerous differences with Hezbollah, but "one thing we agree on is that the national interest of Lebanon is to have stability and to have a government that is functional". The militants have "effectively lost" most of the land they held in the barren, mountainous border region of Jroud Arsal, he added.

Trump is meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who is hoping to shore up support for Lebanon's fight against the Islamic State.

The United States considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization.

Early in the offensive, Saraya Ahl al-Sham - the FSA rebel faction that had a small presence in the area - pulled its fighters from the front lines, Nasrallah said.

According to the battlefield experts, Daesh and al-Nusra bases in the Lebanon-Syria borders are under tight siege and all their supply routes have been cut.

Another item on the prime minister's agenda is continued USA support for the Lebanese military.

The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) face the prospect of losing all military assistance under the State Department's fiscal year 2018 budget request, while Congress is taking new action to expand sanctions on Hezbollah.

"Hezbollah is a menace to the Lebanese state, the Lebanese people and the entire region", Trump said in a press conference with Hariri at the White House. "And we would not like to see them in Syria", he said. However, "My job as the prime minister of Lebanon is how to best shield Lebanon from any problems inside the country".

The operation commander of Hezbollah has declared in a statement that fighting al-Nusra elements is ending and it urged all terrorists to disarm and surrender to save their lifes.

She said the council must get serious about enforcing its resolutions that have been routinely violated by Hezbollah and its backer Iran, including many calling on the militant group to disarm.

He also expressed optimism about security cooperation with Lebanon but did not specify what level of support the U.S. would be providing.

After their oval meeting, Hariri and Trump held a press conference where everything seemed to be going according to plan until the USA president was asked about Hezbollah - a political and military organization, who's also part of the Lebanese parliament.

Hariri's late father, who also served as Lebanon's prime minister, was assassinated by Hezbollah in 2005.

Hariri, meanwhile, expressed his hope that United States military aid would continue to provide support, especially given Trump's "huge understanding" about helping Lebanon's army. Foreign Policy reported that Lebanese lawmakers responded by lobbying their U.S. counterparts in Congress against the legislation.
