Adobe will finally kill Flash in 2020

Twitter Reacts To Adobe Discontinuing Flash Player In 2020

"Where a format didn't exist, we invented one - such as with Flash and Shockwave", said a spokesperson for Adobe, which didn't actually invent either format. The companies announced their support for Adobe's move in separate blog posts.

Anyone who is still using Flash is being encouraged to embrace open standards such as HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly as replacements.

Flash began to lose popularity after Apple chief executive Steve Jobs took the decision not to allow the software on mobile devices such as the iPhone in 2010. This percent has greatly dropped, however, as just 17% of Chrome users visit websites that use Flash.

Flash, if you're not familiar, is the annoying plug-in used in some websites for animations, rich web interactions, and online games.

Adobe has announced plans to end support for its once ubiquitous plugin Flash, and detailed the steps other major technology leaders are taking to ferry Flash devs toward other open standards before the plug is officially pulled. Its death may make it more challenging to play old, Flash-based games and things of the sort, but by and large it should result in a more stable internet-browsing experience for everyone. When Adobe acquired Flash in its 2005 purchase of Macromedia, the technology was on more than 98 percent of personal computers connected to the web, Macromedia said at the time. On Mac OS X, the browsers are Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Opera, and on Linux, Firefox and Chrome are supported.

Microsoft said that Flash would eventually phase out from Edge and IE, "culminating in the removal of Flash from Windows entirely by the end of 2020". For some developers, Adobe Flash made the Internet a worse place because of its vulnerabilities.

The company says it will continue to support Flash through the planned EOL, which means you won't be missing out on security patches and browser compatibility.

The next three-plus years will still see Flash supported by Adobe, including the release of security updates.

Mid-to-late 2018. Microsoft Edge will require explicit permission for Flash to run every time it's encountered. For example, in 2018 Microsoft Edge will require users to give Flash permission to run during each session, and the browser will disable Flash by default in 2019.
