Body of Salvador Dali exhumed

Image Dali's body to be exhumed to resolve paternity case

Salvador Dali's eccentric artistic and personal history took yet another freaky turn Thursday with the exhumation of his embalmed remains in order to obtain genetic samples that could settle whether one of the founding figures of surrealism fathered a girl decades ago.

The foundation didn't know how long it would take to know the results of the DNA test, but said that it would be in time for the next trial in the paternity case scheduled for September.

If proven right, the woman will be entitled to a quarter share of Dali's estate and also his paintings and copyright.

A crowd of onlookers gathered outside the elaborate museum of Dali's work to watch as police escorted the experts into the building which is topped by a huge metallic dome decorated with egg shapes.

Undertakers take a casket inside the Teatre-Museu Dali (Theatre-Museum Dali) after the arrival of forensic examiners for the exhumation of Salvador Dali's remains in Figueras on July 20, 2017.

Either way, minimizing the disruption to the museum's operations and to the rest of Dali's remains is the priority for the foundation managing Dali's estate, according to its secretary. "I am very positive, very happy", Abel told reporters at a Madrid hotel on the eve of Dali's exhumation. Abel said a desire to honor her mother's memory was motivating her paternity lawsuit.

The Salvador Dali Foundation is due to provide details of the exhumation at a press conference tonight.

The 61-year-old woman says her mother, who was a maid in one of Dali's seasonal homes in Port Lligat, maintained a clandestine relationship with the artist.

"We wouldn't say anything, we would just look at each other".

The lawyer for the Gala Dali Foundation, which operates the museum complex requested that the teeth and bone extracted be returned once the tests were done, Felip told the the media. "But a glance is worth a thousand words", she said.

Dali, known for his pencil-thin mustache and eclectic persona, is acclaimed for surreal paintings with equally eclectic features, like melting clocks.

"I live this day with emotion, it reminds me of the day of his death (...) today, Dali is delighted, it is a day to the extent of his person", said with excitement at the AFP Marià Lorca, who was the mayor of this town, when Dali died.

Soon he left for Paris to join the surrealist movement, giving the school his own personal twist and rocketing to fame with works such as "The Great Masturbator". She died in 1982.
