NASA video shows Pluto's mountains and plains, and it's pretty incredible

Get a look at what the surface of Pluto and its moon Charon really look like

In the description of the video, NASA officials wrote, "The viewer first passes over the western margin of Sputnik, where it borders the dark, cratered terrain of Cthulhu Macula, with the blocky mountain ranges located within the plains seen on the right".

The new maps of Pluto and Charon use the highest resolution images captured by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and the Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) to present global mosaics of both worlds. The zoomed camera shows the planet's icy plains and stunning mountain ranges, revealing its awesome bladed terrain in further details exhibiting deep and broad pits.

The second flyover video shows Pluto's largest moon Charon.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft made a historic flight through the Pluto system on July 14, 2015. It provided detailed images of Charon, the largest of Pluto's five moons, which has a reddish coloring and a dark area near the moon's north pole-which was dubbed Mordor, after the dark region in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. But after years of debate, the International Astronomical Union demoted Pluto to the rank of a dwarf planet in 2006, reducing the total number of planets in the solar system to eight.

"The complexity of the Pluto system - from its geology to its satellite system to its atmosphere- has been beyond our wildest imagination", Alan Stern, an investigator for the New Horizons spacecraft, said in a statement. "These new maps from the landmark exploration of Pluto by NASA's New Horizons mission in 2015 will help unravel these mysteries and are for everyone to enjoy".

New Horizons has moved on from Pluto and is now flying deeper into the Kuiper Belt, a vast area filled with icy bodies out beyond Neptune's orbit.

Among other things, New Horizons took pictures of Pluto's mountains and plains, capturing the dwarf planet's "heart", which according to Nasa, is "about the same distance as from Denver to Chicago".

The probe is due to complete a flyby of a small celestial object called 2014 MU69 on January 1, 2019.
