Magnitude-5.8 quake detected off N. Korea's east coast: US Geological Survey

BREAKING NEWS: Has Kim set off another nuke? Magnitude 6.0 earthquake is detected off the coast of North Korea

A rare magnitude 5.8 quake struck off North Korea in the Sea of Japan on Thursday, but was unlikely to cause any damage, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It occurred at 4:18 a.m.

"It occurred at 500 km below the seabed".

The natural disaster occurred 186 kilometers away from the Chongjin port, located in the northern part of the North Korea. John Bellini at USGS told Yonhap there is "no way it was caused by a nuclear test".

The quake was centred far offshore and very deep while North Korea's past nuclear tests were conducted on land.

Pentagon spokesman Maj. Jamie Davis also dismissed the possibility of a nuclear test, pointing to its location and depth, Reuters reported. There's no way it was caused by a nuclear test.

A 5.0-magnitude natural disaster was detected near the site following North Korea's fifth nuclear test last September, and an artificial quake of 5.0-magnitude was recorded following North Korea's fourth nuclear test in January 2016.

Ultimately, the communist nation aims to build an ICBM capable of hitting the continental United States with a nuclear warhead fitted on top. North Korean time, 537 kilometers below the seabed and 193 kilometers southeast of Rajin, northeastern North Korea, the center said.

There were no reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.
