Ex-BSU coach Houston Nutt sues Ole Miss, alleging smear campaign

"It's a lot we inherited and caused in some cases", Freeze said, alluding to the previous coaching staff.

The suit also contends that Ole Miss has made it hard for Nutt to find another coaching job.

Nutt, who went 5-6 in his one season at BSU and then was hired to be the coach at Arkansas, was the Ole Miss football coach from 2008-11, posting a 24-26 record.

Earlier this year, Ole Miss self-imposed a bowl ban for the 2017 football season in light of the NCAA matter.

Former University of MS head coach Houston Nutt filed a federal lawsuit against Ole Miss on Wednesday, claiming current football coach Hugh Freeze and athletic director Ross Bjork violated the university's 2011 severance agreement. The suit says Freeze intentionally lied to journalists in the weeks prior to National Signing Day in order to keep recruits interested in Ole Miss.

Freeze said he has had little contact with Nutt since Freeze - a member of Ed Orgeron's staff - was not retained after Nutt's hiring in December of 2007.

Of the 13 allegations in the NCAA's Notice of Allegations, nine were committed while Freeze has been the coach. "I won't be making any comments about the suit".

"The first four years, I really thought we were relevant in the Southeastern Conference, and that is what I said from day one", Freeze said.

"We obviously have created it, in and around our program", Freeze admitted. Nutt's lawsuit against the university, the university's athletics foundation, and its Board of Trustees accused Freeze, Rebels AD Ross Bjork and sports information director Kyle Campbell of smearing him in an attempt to pin its ongoing investigation on him.

Mars, in the complaint, alleges the trio came to an agreement to carefully orchestrate a misinformation campaign to mislead media, prospects and university boosters about NCAA matters.

Wednesday was a chance for Ole Miss football fans to get a good laugh.

Filed Wednesday, the 21-page document alleged that Ole Miss representatives made "certain false and defamatory statements" about Nutt in the wake of an NCAA-issed Notice of Allegations 18 months ago.

"Adversity tends to crumble people or brings guys together", said quarterback Shea Patterson. "If he can get to that part mentally, see what they are trying to do to stop us, and if he can see it before it happens, I think his ceiling is very high". It's a big deal to be away from a game you once loved and I understand the need to coach again.
