Squirrel Girl Officially Cast For Marvel's New Warriors

Marvel has found its Squirrel Girl

The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Marvel and Freeform's New Warriors series has filled out its cast, with Milana Vayntrub set to spearhead the ensemble as Doreen Green (AKA Squirrel Girl). It's one of the stranger characters within the comic-book universe, but it's also one that has a dedicated following.

Derek Theler, who just finished six years on the Freeform sitcom Baby Daddy, will star as Craig Hollis, aka Mr. She has saved the world from villains including Doctor Doom and Galactus, and actresses including Anna Kendrick, Mae Whitman and Shannon Purser have all previously expressed interest in playing the character. Played by Jeremy Tardy, Night Trasher's combat skills make him a valuable part of the team.

Disney alum Worthy (Austin & Ally) is set to play Robbie Baldwin/Speedball, described as an "impulsive people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence who throws kinetic balls".

Microbe is Zack Smith, a hypochondriac who can communicate with germs in order to track his opponents.

So, are you excited for the upcoming Marvel series? Finally, Kate Comer will play Deborah Fields, a.k.a. Debrii. It's true that the New Warriors aren't as popular as the Avengers, but their comic antics have led to dark events like Marvel Civil War and the transformation of Speedball into the dark hero, Penance.

The show joins a number of other Marvel shows now on the air, including "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", "Daredevil", "Luke Cage", "Jessica Jones" and "Iron Fist".

Marvel TV's president Jeff Loeb also released a statement, saying, "We're so lucky to have assembled such a diverse and incredibly talented cast".

"New Warriors" does not have a premiere date set at this time but it is now expected sometime in 2018. For that role, Marvel and Freeform have recruited Milana Vayntrub, who you may recognize from Silicon Valley or This Is Us, or perhaps most notably, as Lily, the helpful, humorous manager in a long-running string of AT&T commercials. "We can't wait for the fans to see what's in store when we unleash these iconic characters into the world", he said at the time.
