Sen. Collins says she'll vote against motion to advance Senate health bill

Sen. Mike Lee explained in an essay why he doesn't support Senate Republican's Obamacare replacement bill — and what it will take to earn his vote

The BCRA would seek to end Obamacare's Medicaid expansion starting in 2021 and limit government spending on the rest of the Medicaid program.

CBO's projections would represent an abrupt turn from the trends under Obamacare; the USA uninsured rate had dropped below 11 percent in late 2016.

A Senate bill to revamp the health-insurance system would leave 22 million more people uninsured but cut the deficit significantly, according to a new estimate released Monday.

Senate Democrats unanimously oppose replacing Obamacare.

The Senate bill would make financial assistance for premiums less generous than under the current law.

Senate Republicans may quibble with how the CBO scored their legislation, attempting to discredit the nonpartisan analysis. He said that label "stuck with me", because in addition to the bill leaving thousands of CT residents without insurance it removes billions of dollars from Medicaid to support tax cuts for the wealthy.

"So far the Senate leadership is not negotiating with our office", Paul said in an interview on CNN's "Newsroom".

Its projections will also help determine what provisions can and cannot be included under the procedural rules Senate Republicans are using to pass a bill with only 50 votes. How does this forecast affect the chances of the bill passing?

The analysis found that the Senate's bill would result in a whopping 22 million fewer Americans without health insurance by 2026.

The bill would reduce the federal deficit by $321 billion over 10 years.

If the Senate does pass the amended bill - which is not a sure thing - the Senate and House bills would need to be reconciled before being sent to the president's desk.

It would repeal most of the taxes levied under the Obamacare, including those on high-income people and on health care companies. More than a half-dozen Republican senators have publicly stated either opposition to the legislation or skepticism that they could support it.

Lower income, older people, and children with disabilities would lose coverage under the Senate plan, which is meant to reconcile itself with a plan hastily put together by the U.S. House, which is also controlled by the GOP. Critics note some of the savings would be passed along in a tax break for more wealthy Americans. Approximately 15 million people would lose health-care coverage within the first year of implementation alone, relative to current law, ensuring that any blowback would affect dozens of vulnerable Republican lawmakers up for re-election next year.

The bill repeals the individual mandate, which requires all Americans to obtain health insurance if they can afford it or else face penalties. Conservatives may argue that good health insurance plans are an incentive for prospective employees, but what may be business as usual for a corporation the size of Ford is not the model for much smaller ones. And consumers will have less comprehensive coverage than they do now, with higher out-of-pocket costs. CBO estimates that, under the Republican plan, Medicaid spending would be cut by $772 billion by 2026, versus current law.

"You can't take over $800 billion out of the Medicaid program and not expect that it's going to have an impact on a rural nursing home that relies on Medicaid for 70% of the costs of its patients", she said. "1 in 5 Mainers are on Medicaid".
