A 4-year-old girl has died and her father has been listed in serious condition after being struck by a house boat on a Texas lake.
Justice of the Peace David Barfield has ordered an autopsy for Kaitlyn. Bernal told authorities that he could not see behind him due to his boat being three stories tall.
Bernal's bond is set at $150,000.
Temple police said her father jumped in to save her, but became tangled up in the propeller as well. Katlyn died from her injuries at the hospital at 7:45 p.m.
According to police, a 4-year-old girl and her father were hit by a boat while they were in the water at Temple Lake Park.
A Central Texas man had his legs amputated and his young daughter suffered severe lacerations when they were struck by a boat. A witness at the scene stated she saw the boat backing up and heard people in the water yelling.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, after the Temple Police Department in Texas presented its case against Bernal, a complaint that he had committed criminal negligent homicide was issued against him by the Bell County district attorney's office on Sunday afternoon.
Police in a statement Sunday did not specify whether Bernal was driving the houseboat. "Kaitlyn was deeply loved by her parents, Patrick and Mary Ann, as well as her grandparents", the page says.
"On behalf of our grieving family, we humbly ask for donations that will be used for Kaitlyn's funeral expenses, as well as for Patrick's recovery".
