Left denounces racist slogans raised during anti-Gorkhaland protest

Gorkhaland demand: BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya says does not support demand for new state but Mamata Banerjee must apologise to people

The GJM, spearheading the agitation for a separate Gorkhaland, also chose to withdraw from the tripartite accord on the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). Didi (West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) had signed the GTA accord. "She must address their problems", Indian Express reported.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh had said earlier that the creation of states on the basis of ethnicity and language would divide the country into pieces. Sources reveal that the rally was initiated in Darjeeling by the supporters of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

"We did not raise any objection when it came to the creation of states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Telangana". If states are to be created on the basis of a linguistic group or community, we would have to support all such demands such as those of the Kamtapuris, Rajbanshis etc.

In a reference to Sunday's anti-Gorkhaland protests in north Bengal's Siliguri, some Left Front leaders on Monday said raising racist slogans against a certain community is disrespectful to the martyrs who fought for unity in the hills. "I urge everyone to hit the streets in protest". The loss of property, condition of tourists and harassment of the common people have also been laid down by Chatterjee to Singh in the letter. "We are ready for talks only on the issue of Gorkhaland, not on any alternative formula", Gurung said in a video message. "But, the state government did not meet their expectations", he had said.

The rally, which started from IG Park, culminated at Itanagar Monastery where the protesters lit candles in memory of three persons who were allegedly killed in clashes with police in Darjeeling on June 17.
