Huw Edwards' silent BBC News At Ten dubbed the 'best ever'

BBC One The broadcast went off air just moments before News At Ten

The confusion and disruption continued for nearly four minutes on the BBC News Channel.

A technical glitch left newscaster Huw Edwards sitting in silence unaware as the cameras rolled live at the start of the BBC News at Ten.

The only time he mentioned the issue was in a brief statement when he acknowledged there were "a few technical problems, for which we apologize".

He later told Radio 4's The Media Show that he "sensed I might be on" so took "the most conservative approach possible" and sat at his desk reading his notes before the bulletin started.

Another said: "Bbc one crashed and the breaking news thing kept popping up, I thought something extremely serious happened like we were at war or something". "No matter how experienced you are, and I have been presenting for 25 years, its a very unusual set of circumstances". Director had to switch to a back-up system ASAP.

While the news resumed at 10:04pm, Edwards followed the resumption of the transmission with a quick apology putting all Twitter speculations to rest.

Paul Royall, a BBC Editor, tweeted to clarify the case explaining that there was a system crash seconds before they were due to go on air.

After the broadcast, Edwards tweeted a photograph of a can of Welsh beer along with the words: "I think I'm going to enjoy this little beauty after that Ten".

Another, Ian Ford, said: 'Watching Huw Edwards do nothing on BBC news is kind of absorbing, like a lava lamp'.
