OJ Simpson getting July 20 parole hearing date in Nevada

The former National Football League star has served time in a Nevada prison on burglary and kidnapping chargers that were unrelated to the murder of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman in 1994.

The former football player, who is now serving a nine-to-33 year sentence, has been scheduled for a July 20 parole hearing, according to the Associated Press. He was charged with a number of felony counts, including kidnapping and armed robbery.

The one-time Heisman Trophy victor claimed that he was only trying to recover memorabilia that belonged to him.

Simpson will be joined by his attorney Malcolm LaVergne at the Lovelock Correctional Center in the Nevada desert, where he is being held. His bid for a new trial in the case was rejected in 2013, but he was granted parole that same year on some of the charges, based on good behavior.

The parole board will weigh several factors in deciding whether to release Simpson.

Commissioners will be in a hearing room in Carson City, and they will question Simpson by closed-circuit TV.

If Simpson is granted parole next month, he would be released in October.

Simpson's friend Tom Scotto told the network that if the NFL Hall of Famer is paroled, he plans to keep a low profile, spending time with his family and playing golf.

O.J. Simpson may be one step closer to becoming a free man.

While the board typically considers dozens of parolees each day, the July 20 meeting at 10 a.m. will only deal with Simpson's case. O.J. Simpson would go on to be acquitted of criminal murder charges, but be found liable for the deaths in a later civil trial.

Added Goldman's sister, Kim Goldman, "He committed a awful heinous crime, and I have no feeling except rot in hell".
