Four-way tie at US Open as big guns crash out

Day, the world number three, shot a 3-over-par 75 on day two to be 10-over and he will be joined on the sidelines by Scott, after the 2013 Masters champion finished on 3-over courtesy of a 75 in the second round. With birdies on the four of the last six holes, he shot 71.

Jason Day, of Australia, hits from a bunker on the eighth hole during the first round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

He was a long shot to make the cut Friday after opening with a 79, his worst score ever in a U.S. Open, and he removed any suspense when he hit a wedge over the green at No. 2 (his 11th hole) and then started hitting his tee shots in the hay.

He made the turn at 6-under 30, just one off the U.S. Open record of 29 for nine holes. It was the first time since the official world rankings began in 1986 that the top three all missed the cut in a major.

Casey recovered from a triple-bogey on his fifth hole of the day to add a 71 to his opening 66 and set a clubhouse target of seven under par, which was later matched by Fleetwood and American duo Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman.

"I know it's cliche, but the last thing you need to be doing is thinking ahead, especially on this golf course".

"I think the greens are getting U.S. Open-like, but not as firm as they're going to get if we don't get any rain", Garcia said about the course that allowed a record number of sub-par scores in the first round after rain soaked the layout earlier in the week.

Johnson, who won the 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, ended the second round on 4-over following his 1-over 73.

Most weird about Thursday was that as many amateurs broke par as top 10 players in the world - two apiece. With one more birdie on the back nine, Matsuyama carded a sparkling seven-under 65, matching Fowler for the low round of the week. So that kind of takes the advantage away from the bombers. I got off to a good start but it sort of caught up with me as the round went on.

McIlroy's performance might not be that surprising given that he's played only six PGA Tour events this year and missed most of the last month with a rib injury.

The leading South Africans are two-time US Open champion Ernie Els and Thomas Aiken, who are tied for 24th at 2-under-par.

Day shot a 75 for a two-day total of 10-over 154, ending at 17 the longest active streak of making the cut in the majors.

"I lost a bit of skin out there", Casey said of the triple bogey. And if that's not enough of a traffic jam at the top, 18 players are separated by three shots to start the third round.

Overnight leader Rickie Fowler had people watching on the edge of their seats on Friday, but appeared to play far too conservatively.

"It was definitely a lot more like a US Open today than yesterday the greens were a little quicker again", Leishman said.

On the golf course, there was only a barrage of birdies. "The putter was hot on the front side to keep me in it, so it's all there, it's just a matter of putting it together and I'm not out of it".
