Tillerson cancels trip to Mexico to work on Qatar crisis

The United States has a stake in these demands for changes in Qatar's orientation. The U.S. previously turned against Pakistan following revelations that Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden had been hiding in a compound in Abbottabad. The United States could help douse the fire.

In his remarks from London, Jubeir said there was no intention of harming the Qatari people and called Doha an "ally" in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

"In fact, Qatar should provide a list of the material, financial and commercial damage caused by the embargo on them".

Top Arab states cutting ties with Qatar is a "collective punishment", Ali Bin Samikh Al-Marri, head of Qatar's National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), urging the United Nations to investigate the damage done by the blockade.

Qatar has maintained that it "does not, and has not, provided funding for terrorists", government spokesman Saif Al Thani said last week.

It's not that the complaints about Qatar's regional policies are unwarranted. With more than 100 aircraft in operation and more than 11,000 US and coalition forces deployed, the base is co-ordinating, controlling and overseeing the ongoing missions in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Officials had already said it would take a maximum 12 hours for a ship to reach Qatar from Iran's southern ports. It is a major energy supplier to key Western economies.

The U.S. relationship with Qatar has always been love-hate.

But whether by choice or because of the Saudi-led action, there are signs Qatar is becoming more open about the actions it is taking on men suspected of financing terrorism. Another regional player, Turkey, has publicly backed Qatar, criticizing Saudi Arabia's actions and calling for a peaceful solution.

Secretary of State Tillerson has led USA efforts to mediate a way out of the dispute.

It put the U.S.in a hard position because it is allied with nations on both sides of the dispute.

The list included several high-profile Qatari charities that carry out life-saving work across the Middle East and elsewhere, including in Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Palestine.

This is why it's so odd that Defense Secretary James Mattis would sign a $12 billion deal to sell F-15 fighter jets to the Qataris on Wednesday.

This posture is the only reasonable one any US administration could adopt in a unsafe situation that requires care, not bombast.

The top diplomat's remarks follow the polarizing statements made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said that the sanctions imposed against Qatar are unjustified and a huge mistake, and stressing Turkey's continued support given to Qataris. It also needs to tone down its provocations aimed at its larger neighbors.

He said Qatar was attempting to distort facts by trying to project the measures taken as a blockade targeting the Qatari people. It added that Mattis and Attiyah had also discussed the current state of operations against Islamic State and the importance of de-escalating tensions in the Gulf. Hamas has been overly reliant on Iran from one side and on Qatar and Turkey from the other to stay afloat, but its relationship with Iran suffered in tandem with its abandonment of Assad, making its support from Qatar even more critical. Iran has stepped up support for Qatar by sending shipments of food to replace blockaded Saudi supply routes.

Among other African countries, Senegal was first to recall its ambassador from Qatar's capital Doha. They need to understand that they can not dictate to the United States on any moves that affect our interests and our troops.
