Boris Johnson denies plot to topple UK PM Theresa May

"She's staying, for now", a party source told Reuters. The DUP said only that it would enter talks.

"It is clear that only the Conservative and Unionist Party has the legitimacy and ability to provide that", she said.

US President Donald Trump has told British Prime Minister Theresa May that he looks forward to working with her in strengthening bilateral ties after she chose to form a minority government following snap polls, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

"It's an issue very close to my heart and one that I wanted categoric assurances from the prime minister on, and I received (them)", said Davidson, who is engaged to be married to her female partner.

The Conservative leader had called the election in a bid to extend her majority and strengthen her hand in the looming Brexit negotiations, but her gamble backfired spectacularly. No one expected a Labour Party win, but no one had expected Labour to win 31 more seats than it managed in the last election.

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn casting his vote at a polling station at Pakeman Primary School in London, England, June 8, 2017.

But May, facing scorn for running a lackluster campaign, was determined to hang on. "She's attempting to form a government", Corbyn told the Mirror.

"He ends up turning out a better manifesto than the Conservatives, and he can campaign well enough". But May soldiered on Friday, re-appointing senior ministers to her Cabinet and holding talks with a small Northern Irish party about shoring up her minority government.

The result has caused a fresh bout of selling of the British pound, and made European Union leaders still more uncertain about Britain's Brexit priorities.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she doesn't expect any delays in the start of Brexit talks between the European Union and the United Kingdom despite the outcome of this week's British election.

The Liberal Democrats failed to make significant inroads, with Nick Clegg losing his Sheffield Hallam seat to Labour and the party losing several seats, causing questions to be asked about Tim Farron's future leadership.

Conservatives are still in power, Brexit talks are to begin in 10 days, and the status quo may still prevail, but it is on shaky ground. "Let's put our minds together on striking a deal", Michel Barnier said.

"Yet another own goal, after Cameron now May, will make already complex negotiations even more complicated", tweeted Guy Verhofstadt, the former Belgian premier who is the European Parliament's point man for the Brexit process. The result ended his career and shocked Europe. Some experts are calling the Conservatives' unexpected loss of seats a rejection of the "hard Brexit" May has advocated, which would take Britain out of the single market and the customs union and which could see tariffs slapped on British exports to the EU.

DUP leader Arlene Foster said "we have made good progress but the discussions continue". The misconceived Brexit referendum has broken the hold of the Conservative party, and though Theresa May will still be able to form a coalition government, most pundits agree that May ran a poor campaign while Jeremy Corbyn surpassed expectations. "I blame her party for destroying Britain by pushing for Brexit and austerity, two things that will ultimately be bad for my generation".

May had unexpectedly called the snap election seven weeks ago, even though no vote was due until 2020.

It reflects poorly on May's leadership that she has brought her party to this pass.

Today, a second election in the space of a few months would also be Britain's third election in just three years.

In the aftermath of the recent London terror attack, which killed eight and injured 48 others, Trump lashed out at London mayor Sadiq Khan on Twitter, sparking a debate as to whether Trump's state visit invitation should be revoked. She sought to deflect pressure onto Corbyn, arguing he had a weak record on security matters.

No turnout figures for young voters have yet been released.
