Admin Revokes Blocked Program to Protect Immigrant Parents

And while deferred action for "Dreamers" is broadly popular, President Obama's order suspending immigration laws for millions of people who knowingly violated immigration laws as adults doesn't have almost as strong of a moral or political basis.

The June 15, 2012 memorandum that created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will remain in effect.

The move on DACA does not change the tone and approach of the administration, Lorella Praeli, director of immigration policy and campaigns at the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement. Until that happens, policy is likely to continue to swing wildly each time the ruling party loses the White House. Many attended American schools from the time they were in kindergarten. The program has granted work permits and temporary reprieve from deportation to hundreds of thousands of young adults who came to the country as children without authorization.

Current participants will be eligible to seek a two-year extension and "no work permits will be terminated prior to their current expiration dates", a fact sheet from the department indicated.

"Their announcement to keep DACA, while revoking DAPA and deporting family members is deceitful and is another effort to keep immigrant families feeling uncomfortable about their place in America", she said.

Advocates argued, and the Obama administration agreed, that these individuals, while technically existing illegally in the nation, did so not by their own choice. The Trump administration reportedly ended protections for undocumented immigrant parents, protections that had been put in place during the Obama administration.

DAPA was blocked by the courts from implementation, which the Department of Homeland Security cited as a reason for rescinding the program.

The Trump administration is still reviewing a policy set in 2012 by U.S. President Barack Obama that protects from deportation almost 600,000 immigrants brought into the country illegally by their parents, known as "Dreamers", a White House spokesman said on Friday. When I hear folks talking as if somehow these [foreign] kids are different than my kids or less worthy in the eyes of God, that somehow that they are less worthy of our respect and consideration and care, I think that's un-American.

The protection program for parents, like the one for young immigrants, was created with a policy memo, not by legislation. DHS Secretary Kelly's refusal to acknowledge that DAPA exceeded the power of the executive branch suddenly makes some sense; doing so would have de facto tied the administration's hands on DACA. Many remember quite clearly the president's insistence that every single undocumented immigrant in the USA would be deported after his election.
