MI native remains in critical condition after Virginia shooting

Police and emergency personnel near the scene where House majority whip Steve Scalise was shot

The family of Matt Mika released the following update on his condition after Mika was shot this morning during a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

The gunman who fired on lawmakers at the GOP baseball practice has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66.

Rep. Kevin Brady, a Republican congressman from Texas who visited Mika at George Washington University Hospital, lauded his athleticism and team spirit. A public event that had been scheduled for President Trump at the Labor Department on Wednesday afternoon was canceled.

Matt Mika, director-government relations for Tyson Foods Washington, D.C. office, is among those who was shot this morning in Alexandria.

Mika was injured alongside House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, congressional staffer Zachary Barth, and several members on Scalise's security team.

In a statement, Tyson Foods told the Washington Post, "We're awaiting word on his condition".

Mika, an Oakland County native, now works as the director of government relations at Tyson Foods in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman of the state's fourth district said on Twitter: "I am ok".

Although police say it is too early to declare a motive for the shooting, there are indications that the attack was motivated by extremist political views.

"We are grateful for the care he has received, from the first responders in the field to the world-class care here at the hospital". We're praying for him and we love him.
