Hawaii Signs Legislation To Implement Goals Of Paris Climate Accord Anyway

"Climate change is real, regardless of what others say".

Hawaii is the first state in the US that will legally enforce parts of the Paris Agreement.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spent the last five days quietly calling up allies in Europe and Asia as he seeks to forge ahead with climate change policies and worldwide co-operation in a world of "America First".

"Hawaii's natural environment is under threat", Ige said.

Dear Editor: President Trump made the wrong decision for our health and the planet in pulling the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The law commits the state to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to align with the principles and goals of the Paris Agreement.

Excepting the call with May, which focused mainly on security threats following the recent attack in London, each conversation was about charting the path forward on climate change, global trade and sustainable development. "We must acknowledge these realities".

Mayors from Kauai, Maui and the Big Island also signed a commitment to follow the goals outlined in the Paris agreement.

Furthermore, Washington was very effective in weakening the Kyoto Protocol consistently using its political influence and its power in the climate negotiations, although it was not a party to the protocol, Chademana said.

Efforts to reduce emissions and push for clean energy on the Garden Isle include changing streetlights to energy efficient LED bulbs, capturing methane gas at the Kekaha Landfill, and offering more transportation options, Carvalho said.

Gov. David Ige signed two laws that aim to reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration, a process to store atmospheric carbon monoxide.

"Our next major undertaking is to engage our community in the development of a Climate Action Plan", Carvalho said.

Both bills were signed into law Friday in Honolulu. "Together, we can directly contribute to the global agenda of achieving a more resilient and sustainable island Earth", Ige said in a statement. We can not afford to mess it up. The task force has to present its preliminary report to the Legislature in 2023.
