Biden was speaking at Romney's ideas summit, an annual gathering of donors and business leaders in Utah. "By the way, you should run for Senate", he added.

Romney did not give any indication he was considering a run, should Hatch, 83, decide not to run again next year, said one person in attendance, Maryland videographer Dean Dykema.

Biden was appearing at Romney's annual E2 Summit in Deer Valley, Utah, and the two were leading a discussion in front of the summit's attendees Friday evening.

Since then, Romney has been campaigning for Republican candidates.

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 3: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden prepares for the ceremonial swearing in of senators in the Old Senate Chamber at the U.S. Capitol January 3, 2017 in Washington, DC. As Romney considered the position himself, he reportedly spoke with "virtually all the former secretaries of state", including, most notably, Hillary Clinton, who served as the 67th Secretary of State between 2009 and 2013 and ran as Donald Trump's Democratic rival in the 2016 presidential election.

Biden recently launched American Possibilities PAC, a political action committee that has set off speculation about his 2020 intentions.

Hatch has said he hasn't made a decision, but might step aside if Romney gets in.

Romney, a former MA governor, is a Mormon and owns a home in Utah.
